There are workarounds without changing the browser, but the easiest option is to use Internet Explorer or Firefox for which no workaround is necessary. After IBM ceased support for it in 2006, development continues under licence – currently by an outfit named Arca Noae that keeps it alive with occasional releases for the small band of enthusiasts who still admire, or require, the software. Recent versions of Chrome have problems with Silverlight, and Safari has a built-in Sandbox feature which also causes problems for Silverlight. Perhaps curiously, it was never open-sourced – The Register understands its presence in military hardware made that move inadvisable. OS/2 gradually faded from use, making occasional public appearances on Automatic Teller Machines' boot screens to remind the wider public of its existence. The only way Microsoft can make Silverlight work on iOS isn't as much an 'adaptation' as 'a complete redesign and implementation in a way that makes it into something entirely other than what it is now'. By the time Big Blue brought it to market, though, Microsoft's dominance had been entrenched. Silverlight is a system, not an app - inherent in it is the fact that it will require an interpreter, or a local compiler of some sort. IBM kept OS/2 alive, and its fourth release was widely regarded as superior to Windows 95 and Windows NT.
